Sonic Immersion : Interactive engagement in realtime immersive environments
نویسنده
چکیده
As I walk into the gallery, I hear a soft trickling, ambient sound, as if the room from which it comes is singing, resonating to an unseen excitation, calling out its place in the world, assured and wholesome, extrovertly trumpeting the technological wizardry it contains – inviting, like a siren on a rock, but here disguised, enclosed, almost intimate. I walk towards the source and stand at the threshold of the room, absorbing the rich and multifarious tones, aware as I come closer, of their complexity, an almost life like sense of movement, of interaction and articulation in the resonating layers. The audible domain provides an intuitive, experiential, visceral, instinctive, spontaneous and intimate perceptual habitat where the human body is central, where a visceral engagement with sonic architectures may dismiss the western mind-body split as hopelessly inadequate. These characteristics allow the interactive sound environment to present a unique articulation of space and place, one in which the fluidity of the human body can be empowered to find new ways of engaging with the immediate environment. This unique and many faceted approach appoints space itself as a performative medium, instructing the user in new ways of listening, whilst simultaneously casting the listener as creator, a performative agent.

Cultural Engagement in Virtual Heritage Environments with Inbuilt Interactive Evaluation Mechanisms
My initial premise is that virtual heritage environments currently do not provide a sense of ‘cultural’ engagement, and, secondly, that is it important to fulfill these needs. Indeed, how can we develop virtual environments for cultural applications that successfully evoke a sense of engagement or immersion? This paper suggests that the above issue has been indirectly addressed by entertainment...

متن کاملJourneys through the Cave: the Use of 3d Immersive Environments for Client Engagement Practices in Hospital Design
One of the benefits of the growth in BIM use in the design and construction industries is the opportunity for increasing the involvement of, and interaction with, various stakeholders and end users through the design process. This includes the use of virtual models in collaborative 3D immersive environments, such as the CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment), during critical moments of clien...
متن کاملLearner immersion engagement in the 3D virtual world: principles emerging from the DELVE project
This paper investigates the issues surrounding the use of 3D virtual worlds to enhance learner immersion through improved learner engagement. It is based on findings from the JISC-funded DEsign of Learning spaces in 3D Virtual Environments (DELVE) project at the University of Nottingham and the Open University. Given continued confusion about the term immersion, what it means for a learner to b...
متن کاملImmersive interfaces for engagement and learning.
Immersion is the subjective impression that one is participating in a comprehensive, realistic experience. Interactive media now enable various degrees of digital immersion. The more a virtual immersive experience is based on design strategies that combine actional, symbolic, and sensory factors, the greater the participant's suspension of disbelief that she or he is "inside" a digitally enhanc...
